Radar Detector

Uniden folks. Are you running the blendmount w the mirrortap? Just ordered this combo from Amazon and look forward to installing. Hope it’s not a pain to do so. 2 days into BW ownership, I feel naked without a detector.
There’s another thread in here somewhere where me and several others detail the install — I don’t have it handy but’s it’s in here in the interwebz somewhere.

I hard wired mine to the fuse box. I might return the Blendmount. With the R4, the GPS signal is a problem. Yesterday, it took about 20 minutes to get a signal in the morning. I believe it is getting blocked in that location. I didn't have any issues with the large suction cup mounted to the left of the plastic area.

Here’s exactly what I bought. It’s a VERY clean install, and I’m still extremely happy with it. Loctite the screws that hold the mount on.

Also have the R8 mounted up above the mirror itself via perma window mount. Originally went with the standard pin tap from the rearview but when Gen5DIY had a sale I jumped on their harness. Very clean at this point. I have my ALP system in the box still, waiting for time to install and still dev'ing some grill mounts for the heads.

Wow, $100 for that harness, the normal fuse block hardwire is $30.

Ya, looks like they recently went up in price. I got mine for $65 during a black Friday deal. Actually got two as this harness also worked for my 21' Suburban.

Can't believe these units are still so huge. Look like ones from the 80's.

There is a microwave horn antenna inside and some waveguides to direct and focus on the sensor. A certain collection area is needed for sensitivity and can’t get around basic physics. You can see the antenna assembly in the video.

2025 CT5 Blacking with Uniden R7 hardwire instructions:

For the 2025 CT5 BW- I ordered this wiring kit from Amazon (you will use the smallest pin variant of the 3 provided). Remove the plastic surround attached to the windshield using a 1 inch wide plastic pry tool (Harbor Freight has them cheap). On my PDR/Surround view optioned car the driver side of the windshield trim piece has 2 large metal clips that pull straight out away from the windshield. The passenger side has one metal clip towards the headliner and a smaller plastic clip close to the front facing PDR camera. There is a smaller trim piece attached in the middle top of the larger trim piece and it can be removed easily by pulling straight away from the windshield near the top of the larger trim piece once it is loose.

Once the larger trim piece is removed and mirror adjusted out of the way, you are looking for a wiring harness in the lower left corner attached to the windshield area behind the trim you just removed. You can temporarily disconnect the wiring harness to give yourself room to tap the PURPLE wire for the 12v positive tap, and the BLACK with WHITE wire for the negative connection. The pins will go in about 3/4 of the way and should be tight due to friction. Use a zip tie to secure the new wiring kit to the existing harness for strain relief. Verify the detector powers on with engine start and turns off after power down. Reinstall the trim pieces and you're done. 15 minute job if you take your time.

Known issue with the new dash display:

I have a Uniden R7 and its a known issue you will get an annoying intermittent false Ka alert on 35.100 (and possibly other frequencies depending on your detector) which appears to be caused by insufficient RF shielding of the dash display. More info here: Radar Detector issues The fix is to apply metal shielding tape to the back side of the display - I haven't had a chance to research disassemly of the screen trim to complete this yet but will post a howto when I fix mine. Alternative would be to program a whitelist in your radar detector (the Uniden R8 has this functionality) - this isn't currently an option for the Uniden R7.
