Engine Failure

Another one bites the dust! I was thinking of not driving the car that much through yr but as more and more issues pop up, I ponder if I should just drive the crap out of this car while in the 7 yr warranty.

Huh......you don't say. My damn Toyota has over 100 times the mileage without a single powertrain issue, 389,000 to be more precise.

Seriously though, this doesn't instill a lot of confidence now does it.....

The Goat Rodeo is coming back to haunt!!

Toyota has to replace how many Twin-Turbo V-6's again? All of them have issues my friend....

Yeah but the difference is that Toyota is recalling 100k TT V6s after admitting they have a problem and preemptively replacing the engine. GM is having a bottom end failure issue with the 6.2 V8 across all platforms and pretending like there is no issue.

We have no idea if GM knows what the issue is but choosing to ignore it due to the cost of a recall, or if GM still has no idea what the issue is.

Also this 6.2 V8 bottom end issue appears to be new, as the ZL1 and Z06 LT4s didn't seem to have it. Some relatively new change to the 6.2s must be the issue.

Oh boy, not good

6.2L in the trucks and SUV's have been having issues since 2014 IIRC. It's some 800,000 vehicles. Multiple issues causing failure.

Let's not begin to pretend that any of The Big Three are in the same league as Toyota (Honda probably has a place near the top end as well) as far as reliability goes. The domestics certainly have some catching up to do. Everyone knows this. I am venturing into GM for the first time (aside from classics) because of the unique configuration of the 5BW 6MT. I shouldn't have to hope I don't get burned, but here I am.

The LT4 has been around since what? 1996? Then they slapped a supercharger on it in 2014? If they don't have the kinks ironed by now, that is pretty discouraging.

I also find it rather disappointing that we as consumers make excuses for these manufacturers because "they all have issues" (a vague generality). So damn what! When you wait 18+ months in the Goat Rodeo to purchase a $125K automobile there shouldn't be any tolerance for these types of catastrophic failures! None!!

No doubt the 6.2L truck engines are having substantial problems. I traded out of my 2020 6.2L Sierra half ton at 55k miles. The motor was glorious for me, never a single issue, but without question I was nervous to own it out of warranty.

I do not see near the reports with LT4 as I do L87. We have documented maybe 40 "blown" LT4s from 2022 - 2024 on this website. Let's say maybe there are actually 100 blown LT4s. From 2022-2024 Cadillac produced 5000 + CT5-V Blackwings? While we may not like a 2% failure rate, Cadillac is no doubt fine with that.

The 1996 LT4 from the C4 Corvette is not at all similar to the LT4 in the C7 Corvette. They basically share the RPO code and that's it.

Toyota didn't admit it had a problem until the engine had been in production for 2 years; years that were full of problems for owners. Some owners experienced an engine failure, then had their engine replaced, and then had their replacement engine fail. The forums were full of these stories.

Toyota only recalled the engines after almost 1% of them had failed (in under 3 years), and they could no longer deny a problem existed.

Even after the recall, not all observers were convinced Toyota had correctly identified the problem. Toyota chalked it up to a manufacturing problem, but these engines have a different type of main bearing material and use a weird frame thing in lieu of traditional main bearing caps.

It's a weird time in cardom. If you had told me 20 years ago that one day I would own a GM vehicle - a Cadillac, of all things - and that the car would have a twin turbo V-6 that is more reliable than the one made by Toyota, and have a cleaner interior design than a BMW M3, I would have thought you were on crack.

edit: accidentally some words

A decade should be enough time to iron out disastrous fatal failures, no?
The LT4 in Corvette and Camaro trims are very reliable engines. The LT4 in the Cadillacs are slightly different than those used in the Z06 and Camaros. The main differences I think are the intake and exhaust systems leading to tuning differences. Whatever is the issue with the V series LT4 seems to be unique to them, not the LT4 in general. I don't recall the 2022 5BW having similar issues, either.

Do the LT4's use the same blocks as the SUV 6.2's? From what I was reading, there have been massive issues with GM 6.2's from 2021-2023. There was some tool that was out of spec causing the boring to not be done correctly on 33% of engines and leading to these failures. Issue was supposedly fixed in 2024.

Is the engine failure ‘22-‘23 BW5 specific? I haven’t seen anything regarding the ‘24 or 25’. I ask for selfish reasons as my ‘25 arrives to the dealership in the next few days God willing (keeps getting delayed despite computers showing it left Detroit and is in transit). I’d like to know what to keep an eye out for.

Also, did those experiencing the failure adhere to the recommended break in process?

@CB34 ....there are two issues with the 6.2L in the trucks and suv's. One is lower and one is with the main IIRC. Those engines are facing NHTSA investigation from around 2018 to 2024 IIRC. Somewhere around 800K vehicles. GM claims the issues are "fixed" for 2025, but won't say what they did, nor does anyone else know.

I like the sound of it being fixed for the ‘25s. Here’s hoping they’re not just blowing smoke.🚭
