Check engine light at 900 miles

I have a 2017 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited. I replaced both batteries last year in April. They were the original factory batteries. The car has a main battery and a start/stop auxiliary battery (size of a motorcycle battery). They put both batteries under the passenger front seat. It takes about a half hour to access and remove them. My car was needing to be jumped after only 2 days of sitting. I had a 3 year full warranty from Auto Zone and replaced the main battery. I 99% of the time turn off the stop/start function. I took the car to the dealer, when the car died again with a new/replaced battery. It ends up (of course) that the aux. battery was not holding a charge and it affects the main battery. Car has had no problems since. Prices are crazy to replace 2 batteries. main battery $250/ aux battery 120 1hr labor $160....total cost $530. getting access to the batteries in these cars has become a project. I can pull and replace a battery in my 1967 Cadillac in less than 5 minutes.
The aux battery of any Jeep is in the category of 10 of the dumbest engineering fails of the century.

My wife just replaced her 4 1/2 YO battery in her RAV4. It was around $210 at Autozone. That was one of the less expensive choices. She could have spent close to $300. Guy said batteries don't last much more than 3 years any more, especially here in AZ.

meh you get what you pay for .... the battery in my 2011 r8 was original and still very strong

@dinkman ...yes, somewhat true. My 6 yo battery in my Expedition is good and still kicking. The heat just kills batteries out here, especially with her car sitting outside at work all day.

Just replaced my 2014 Challengers 6 1/2 year old battery. Paid $325 for an OEM MOPAR battery. The battery price doubled since 6 years ago.
If you lived in AZ you would have replaced 3qty in that time so consider yourself lucky!

...and if you buy the Interstate variant at Costco it would be about half that price

My Odyssey battery in my Jeep is over 7 years old and I live in Southern Arizona. My secret, it’s constantly hooked up to a marine battery charger with proper amperage rating.

My Blackwing is also on a marine battery charger a lot of the time. These chargers cost more than a battery but pay for themselves. I’m not sure Odyssesy makes a battery for my 5BW but if they do I’m going with that.

I have a small F550 diesel dumptruck and it has two batteries that are 9 years old. I only drive it once every couple months and it's still is going strong, starts like a champ.

I think battery life depends on your drive cycle length and how many start/stops you have and whether the battery is in under the hood or inside the vehicle. I replaced my battery in my 09 V at the 8 year mark just because I assumed it was going to die without warning. Likewise, I replaced the AGM battery in my wife's car at 7 years for the same reason. Both batteries lasted until we sold the cars (another 6 and 7 years respectively).

The "charger" has ZERO relationship to your said battery's lifespan. Normal people in AZ don't buy 2-3x cost of battery for a "Odyssey" which should last realistically to it's full warranty period in AZ climate. Daily driven vehicles with engine bay mounted batteries in AZ should expect with todays vehicles electrical demands 2-3yrs and 4yrs almost never happening. Again, we're talking "DAILY" driven "Normal" people on the hwy in traffic driving 20-30miles to work, errands, kids all that crap.

My main point is buy a high quality battery and use it as recommended. Oydessy batteries as essentially marine use batteries and are intended to be on a charger when not in use. I have run the battery down several times to very low voltages, Jeep would not turn over. I have a large drain demand application (winch) and an appropriate application battery is needed. It might be overkill to use a marine charger on my 5BW but I don’t care, playing it safe.

Battery-related this time it seems?

How can I tell? Last time it was an injector that had to be replaced.
I just did a quick search on Google and that seems to be what it is related to.

Dealer said the code is related to the exhaust valve
Okay, well that should be a pretty easy fix. Have you changed the exhaust or anything?

I got the car with 10 miles, respected the break in period. Had the oil changed at 850 miles. Today I opened it up a bit taking the RPM's to 5k and I could feel a bit of a shudder/lack of power above 4k and sure enough the check engine light started flashing. Ironically a few minutes later the power steering light came on and the steering wheel became noticeably stiffer, probably unrelated but strange. Called my local dealer and the soonest they can get me in is about 9 days from now. To be careful I will park it and drive something else in the meanwhile. The advisor said I can drive it just keep it at low RPM's, just not worth the risk to me. It sounds like a misfire, just hoping this isn't anything catastrophic like some of the other engine failures I have read about on the forms. Sure seems odd to happen at such low milage, having respected the break in period of keeping it below 4k rpms and changing the oil early on. Fingers crossed it is something simple to fix. Has anyone else had a similar issue on the forums to what I described? Car is a 2023 manual transmisson.
My 2023 BW kept having engine light come on - dealership couldn't figure it out - called in an engineer, they figured it had something to do with the manifold - replace a part. Worked great for about 1-1/2 months - engine light came on again, brought the engineer back and decided that it was the ECM and replaced that - checked everything against a new 2024 BW and all the readings were identical. We shall see if that's what it was. Maybe ask your dealership to check ECM.
