Blackwings and Watches

I guess I flip watches like a lot of people flip cars around here. Why not, in many ways much less trouble than cars and much less depreciation. Rolex makes good watches, the movements aren’t pretty hence why no glass case back. They do perform well, are tough, and good resell money. The ones I’ve owned are extremely accurate, around 1 to 2 sec a day. While COSC is -4 to +6. They are not my favorite watch for a simple reason, I prefer some numbers on the watch. If I had to sell all my watches except one I’d keep the SeaQ.

There are a lot of Rolex haters for a variety of reasons. I’m pretty neutral about them.
Oh. You were talking about flipping. Yah, Rolex is a great brand for that. I call myself an enthusiast, not a collector. I don't buy watches to try and make money. I have bought and sold as my tastes evolved. Win some, lose some. But I buy what I love, and I guess that is why Rolex has no appeal for me. Ironically, because of my other purchases and relationships over 25 years, I can get most any Rolex I want rather easily. I last passed on a black dial steel Daytona maybe 2 years ago. That tells a dealer a lot, because everyone knows it is just a phone call to make 10-20k or more.

I used the wrong word maybe. I’m generally not making any money. I guess I would call it serial dating. I wear it for a couple years until something else seems more appealing. The Daytona has no appeal to me, would not pursue one either.

Rolex is better now. There for a while Omega was eating their lunch on quality and design vs price.

But Rolex adapted bringing in ceramics, better AR coatings, more textured dials and color options.

I held a $300,000 rainbow Daytona the other day and couldn't put it down fast enough 😅

Watches for me have all been a "love" at first sight type thing. I either want it or would not wear it if someone gifted it to me.
And on that note I have never seen a Rolex that I "loved". Could not tell you why exactly its just an instant experience feeling that one gives me and I know I want it.
An example of a first sight love that nearly gave me a stroke when I saw its price is the Ulysses Nardin Marine Mega Yacht. I knew nothing of the brand up until that sighting. I saw that watch in something I was reading and showed my wife and said something along the lines of "I think ill be on the look out for one of these."
Welp I happen to visit an AD while I was cruising with her in the Islands and that was the end of that dream. :)

The Daytona was what first caught my eye out of all the Rolex options. After trying one on I was not totally impressed with the look on me. Granted it was two tone band and I'm not into gold at all. Tried the sub and a GMT. The GMT was nice and I liked the option to find one in a left handed watch. I'm not a lefty but would generally wear a watch on my right hand. Then the sales lady brought out a yachtmaster/oysterflex band and the face of the watch was solid diamonds. Asking price was $125,000!!! I'd rather buy a third BW for that. Low and behold I was in love with it. Now I'm waiting for one in white gold with the same band. What the hell am I doing!?!?!? Supposed to be in by Q2 this year.

Did you really just tell everybody on here that you have a watch worth over $300,000? 😳

No sir. If you check it again you will see I said that was the END of that dream. LoL
Oh! Haha, I thought you meant the dream turned into a reality. I read that all wrong 🤣

Years ago, I was invited to watch the UN sponsored Team Artemis boat race in Bermuda. Very cool experience.

The Marine Grand Deck had just been released. I don't recall the MSRP without going back and checking. Maybe 250k. For the affluent nautical fellow, this is a sick piece. Real wood dial, and a "boom" retrograde minute hand that sweeps across the wood deck and then resets. The hour is displayed in jumping format in the main window, and a tourbillon at 6:00 completes this beast. Fascinating mechanism in person. It was also made in platinum, and that one looked even better with different colors. This brand used to innovate like no other, but sadly after being sold to Kerring Group and then another company after, they have gone so far South. Used to be one of my 2 favorite brands. I'm surprised they are still in business to be honest.

Now I'm waiting for one in white gold with the same band.

That is a mystery I've never solved - why pay extra for gold that looks just like cheaper steel models ?

Same for platinum, although even bigger $$$ gap I presume.

I can't stand a watch that you have to do trigonometry in order to figure out what time it is. Richard Mille watches are at the top of that list. I think they are the ugliest watches on the planet that cost as much as a very nice house. These are my own collection. I do love my Invictas. Cheap and work just as well as Rolex. I don't have to worry about banging any of my watches up. My G Shocks are my daily's. Each one represents a big event in my life. Especially my really cheap Cadillac V-watch that was given to me when I got my Blackwing.

Just got a call that it’s ready for pickup from repair/servicing and it reminded me I took this picture months ago for this thread and never posted it.

Everybody needs a Speedmaster. Super comfortable on the Uncle Seiko 1450 bracelet.

I love the new stepped dial and bracelet. They are the perfect all-around watch!
They are iconic and that alone is a good reason to have one in the collection. The issues I have come down to personal preference in dial and hand style.

I knew fake watches must exist, but this is the first time I've seen carbon copy fakes being openly sold as fakes. They even claim to be based in the USA.

Other than pure trust, how do you detect these ?

Anyone ever compared them side by side ?

Are the aftermarket dealers up front about their methods to determine authenticity ?
