Multi-topic thread on retirement and second car

TDS has infected this thread.
I have a relative that just checked himself into a mental facility over the last election. People, we have laws and checks and balances for good reasons. None of us have the power today to change anything. Instilling fear to others based on your opinions wont fix or help anything either. In the last 8 years both sides have had control. Both sides make all sorts of threats and how often do they follow through with it? Rarely. The ACA, IMO, was probably the most extreme change we've had in the last 25 years. Creating a new tax burden to the country for a small percentage of the population didn't seem fair to the majority.

I like talking about cars. And retirement.

My 5BW was bought to be a daily. Then, I started liking it too much and found the excuse of no all-season tires. Now I bought a beater RAM for inclement weather, making the 5BW a great second car. Actually third since the spouse's X3 is daily.

As for retirement... it is brutal with seven older siblings that are starting to retire in mass. Their peer pressure and the positive reflections in this thread has got me running the numbers, hard.

Good that he recognized he needs help. A large part of it are people without a God that make government their religion. They have the fervor of religious extremists. Then when they find out they have been lied to they have a moral crisis. Stop watching and listening to legacy media, there is very little truth to be had there. Always go back to the source data and material to get the information.

Religious freedom also means the freedom not to believe in some silly all powerful being and more importantly not to be ruled by people that do. Like I said, I hope he gets all that he wants and people feel the pain of it. Oh and he will default on the deficit and not raise the debt ceiling. Not that’ll be fun to watch. I think we hit that by early summer.

It is hard to think about retirement without thinking about the political climate as well. Like marriage, I plan to retire one time only. Couldn't imagine retiring then having to go back into a work force due to something out of my control.
But now we've added religion into the non political thread. Everyone should believe in something. I believe this thread gonna get closed sooner or later.

Thankfully, back on topic. To reemphasize what's been said, only retire if you're truly ready. If I had a nickel for every time I saw my former employees retire prematurely, I'd have been able to retire way earlier. Again, don't give up you're salary, benefits and seniority unless you're truly ready.

As much as we drifted into politics and religion here, there was no name calling and it was brought up in a mature intelligent manner. People aren't denigrating each other, which is encouraging. I agree that nobody will be changing their minds here, especially two weeks after the election. Those choices were already made.

As for retirement. I found out I won't get the retiree health insurance option until my next birthday. So I now have more thinking to do. I will check and see what the current rates are in the marketplace. But I may wind up having to wait another 7 months. grrrr. I don't like getting up to go to work in the morning. Always hard to get out of bed.

I ended up having to wait an additional 2 months for medical benefits. I was just glad to have found out rather than to have had those 2 months with no coverage, just in case.

The only thing I want to bring to this thread is this:

How dare you, I'm 32, retirement age my ass! I bring the average Cadillac ownership age down!

In all seriousness if you want a manual track car go pick up a BRZ/Scion/86. RWD, manual, cheap ownership costs, consumables cost nothing.

If you want something with a little more oomph but more consumable costs a Camaro 1LE is a fantastic buy.

Canada here, and instead of telling all you Yanks that you’re all crazy, left right, and centre (yes, that’s how you’re supposed to spell it) pissing on each other about shit that every other wealthy, civilized country on this planet settled 50 years ago or more, I’ll post a picture of the second car that is likely going to replace either or both my old MR2 or my new Blackwing (they’re both kind of second cars) when I finally move on from one or both of them, which will likely coincide with my retirement:

I ALMOST pulled the trigger on a new LC500 before getting a 2nd Blackwing. Couldn't do the lack of acceleration, haha. Great cars though, very different, in a good way.

Try thousands of years. We’re still trying to figure out what a man and a woman are. It’s become more complicated with the new information that men can have babies. This information came a little too late for me now that I’m nearing retirement.

WE are not. A very small select group with loud voices are the only ones confused. I thought we were supposed to trust the science?

I get it. I understand how you feel. I often feel out of step with folks - for all kinds of reasons. And certainly as i get older I'm feeling much more out of step, but thats OK...just the way of things. One of the old guys I play poker with says he no longer is a fan of baseball....his reason....players shouldn't be allowed to wear beards. So OK....many of our values are out of step (not saying we are wrong per se). Anyway I always tell him that no one cares what he thinks and it won't make any difference anyway.

As to the issue of gender fluidity. Again, in many ways it is (personally) alien to me. However, as a trained cultural anthropologist I am aware of this sort of thing in numerous cultures throughout history. The Vikings for instance had men who essentially lived as women and stayed back with the wives etc when the others did manly things (like rape, kill, slaughter and acquire slaves etc)....so there is in fact quite a bit of precedent.

Lots of things in "modern" (current) western society confuse me....I don't quite get it (tattoos for instance and cheek piercing etc). But I just accept that I just don't get it. Live and let live (for the most part). I don't like when other people tell me what to do or how to think....so i try to avoid being too judgemental about others.

There are also quite a few things that we do as a society, as a civilization, that could be judged harshly....and likely will be by future humans (or robots) one day when our era has passed....what can i say...even Cadillac Blackwings (keeping it car relevant)...though I think they may in fact be appreciated down the road a bit. Anyway F em.

My survival bunker is almost finished. My wife just needs to decide what color to paint the blast door.:pat
:useless

Mine is a work in progress and will add pics once I have some worth posting. 10x12 16" concrete room twice rebar'ed and under ground. A Murphy door will keep it incognito.

I retired at 47. I started planning for retirement the day I started working. I enjoyed summer vacation so much when I was a kid that I decided a life of leisure was the life for me! I'm not married. I don't have and never planned on having children. I live in a very nice but modest home that was bought and paid for long before I retired. I'm really not all that excited about travel. It's really all about saving and living within your means.

As for the cars, I currently have four and two motorcycles. I have retirement accounts, both traditional and Roth IRA's. I'm 61 now. I hear you guys discussing cars alot and it's always modern cars. For me vintage cars are where it's at! Most of my vehicles are still gaining value. In a few years I may decide to sell a couple of vehicles to finance a vacation home but we'll see.

Btw if you're wondering what I did to achieve all of this, I was a Police Officer. It's a job I wouldn't even consider if I were just starting out today. I understand that the cost of health care is a major concern for most early retirees but thankfully my health care was paid for which made retirement possible for me.

Again it's all about planning, saving and living within your means. Choosing not to have kids didn't hurt either. 😂
