Multi-topic thread on retirement and second car

Apologies, but I do have an amusing little tale concerning my first experience in Anacostia (think Camden for those of you who don't know DC). I was driving (so it is at least somewhat car related).

It was 1980 and I was 19 trying to take a new way home out of DC where I worked back to Maryland where I lived. I took a wrong turn and ended up in Anacostia. At my first light a nasty looking guy walked up to my car and opened my passenger door and tried to get in.....I sped through the red light to get away leaving him on the ground. On the other side of the light a black guy in Army uniform flagged me down and I pulled over. he told me I shouldn't be there and I told him i was lost. I let him get in the car and he directed me to the freeway entrance, got out and wished me luck. I don;t think the first guy was just trying to give me directions.

Anyway, I have a good Camden story as well but I'll save that one.

DCV you need to chill. While I likely share some of your concerns this isn't the place for it and your comments don't help anything at all.

Camden! Between going to the hospitals with/for different family members and a former girlfriend going to Rutgers, I can tell you many stories about Camden too.

No doubt. My one and only time (in the mid 1980s) I was a passenger on a work trip driving through and the driver who fit in more and was familiar with the place had me get down low in my seat so I couldn't be seen....LOL.

Three thoughts:

1) This is my thread. Knock off the insulting crap, people. If you don't like what someone wrote, ignore it please, or take it elsewhere.

2) Re: giving wrong directions. Years ago I was at my favorite gas station (you remember those, the places with a garage and a mechanic as well as a few special "full service" pumps?) chatting with the owner as I waited for my car, and this guy walks in and asks me for directions. I told him where to go, and he walks out.

I look at the owner and said, "that rude little S.O.B. didn't even bother to say thank you!" He replied, "some of these people, they come in here, they don't buy anything, they're rude and insulting, so if they need to go North, I send them South. Har, har, har." I thought that was a bit extreme, but still kind of funny.

3) there is no #3, please see #1 again. Let's all get along, OK?

Back in the mid-1990s my wife and I were on a 3 week vacation in Turkey where we did lots of driving, including at times picking up hitchhikes, such as this wild Aussi couple we ended up hanging with for a few days.

We were crossing a pretty remote stretch South to North - heading back to Istanbul - on some unmarked dirt roads and we stopped to ask this guy who was talking with a tractor driver at a crossroads for directions. Well he offered to get in the car with us and show us the way. Of course he took us the wrong way (to where he wanted to go as we eventually found out)....but he only lasted a few minutes in our car as I was driving around 60 MPH on the dirt road and he was absolutely terrified and clamored to get out. Of course he sent us off the wrong way - probably an hour out of our way.

This was the same stretch where we drove into the back of some kind of Turkish Army base. We're driving along this ridge when about a dozen tanks come rolling up the hill towards us. I manage to speed away and we ended up coming down the mountain into the main entrance of the base from the inside out. A bunch of Turkish troops with machine guns ran out and surrounded our rental car. A big fat guy with stars and a hat who i call "the general" steps up to my window and starts blabbering at me....I just say "American!" a few times (which was more appreciated back then). He smiled widely and dismissed his troops and invited us in for tea.

I respectfully disagree that this is your thread. This is not how the internet works. If it belongs to anyone it is Rob.

As a side note, you would not hold up well on a Jeep forum.
