About to Order, Engine Failure Questions

lol just keep drinking the koolaide then.
The US voted for a guy that claimed he would do what he can to stop illegal immigration and illegal drugs from crossing the border. He's doing what the people voted for. Who would complain about wanting to stop all that?

We know who.

49.8% of the US who actually did vote, voted for him, not all of "the US". What you're failing to see in this discussion is that he is putting tariffs in place with the excuse that it's because there's so much fentanyl coming across the border. That's not true and anybody who's involved directly knows it. It's just an excuse.

Just because the bully slams you up against your locker and threatens you, doesn't mean giving him your lunch money was necessary or a good thing, it's just what is needed to get him to let you go. It's kind of embarrassing to be the country that only gets what it wants by threatening, bullying, and throwing a fit

I have a hard time believing what your brother-in-law says. I live 15 minutes from one border crossing and 25 minutes from the next border crossing. I am friends with people who work at the customs buildings, and know a lot of local troopers. None of them ever mentioned what you just said. The biggest issue we have is that the border between the US and Canada, about 1 hour north of me, is a land border and it is all on the native reservation. Therefore, it can't really be monitored in a meaningful way.
Plus plenty of meth/fentanyl etc etc go north into Canada. There are so many methheads in Northern ‘Sota and WI etc it’s crazy.

You don't tariff a country who is a great ally and trade partner (i.e. Canada) because 1% of immigration and fentanyl come across the border unless you're a moron or like @bamagrad03 said, you want something.

On another note, I think the Supra is pretty cool. I've tried to talk my wife into one. I bet if it was a convertible she'd be all over it.

There is a convertible Supra, it's called the Z4. Unfortunately, it's fugly.

As for the tariff discussion, they had Robert Lighthizer on 60 minutes last night. Mr. L has been a economic advisor to several administrations since Reagan, including T's first one. He (Mr. L) is, dare-I-suggest, a rabid tariff proponent, and he's dead sure that this is the right way to go. I don't necessarily agree with anything that he said, but it's probably worth watching this interview to better understand their perspective.

Well, we know he only hires the best people!

Ah yes the war on drugs and nice logical fallacy there to go with it. Many administrations before have spent billions/maybe trillions and they haven’t put a dent in the amount of drugs in the US over the decades.

I’m guessing the people didn’t vote to crash the economy in the effort to stem the flow of drugs.

I’m not saying he/the current administration shouldn’t try, but I’m guessing it’ll work out the way it always has. Billions down the tubes and drugs still a plentiful on the street……

Okay, if it helps everyone to blame the Canuck who started this, blame me, but let's not start another blue versus red civil war.
This thread was originally about the reliability of the LT4 engine until it went down a "whether or not there will be a 2026 Blackwing at all" rabbit-hole which led to this Canadian bunny leading you down a "tariff economics/politics" rabbit-hole, and for which I again offer my sincerest possible and most Canadian apology.

... though I could say a ton about all the dangerous crap that enters this country from your side... sorry, sorry again, strike that!

Wrong. Anyone that wanted and could, should have voted. Ultimately the US voted him in. What you're failing to see, similar to many that deep throat the media, is this is how Trump prefers to make deals. Throw all the bullshit at the wall and see what sticks. His style doesn't work for the majority, myself included. What matters to me is what actually happens instead of the deepthroat news. Seeing how Mexico is already changing tune tells me his approach is beginning to work with them already. Get back to me when the tariffs go into effect to the north. And dont worry, you'll still find a guy on a corner somewhere to get your next hit.

Apparently it will have to wait, the saber has stopped rattling for the next 30 days

That was a good interview. When 60 Minutes shows up you usually end up looking bad. The power of editing what you see in the final release.

My family fixes high end cars for a Chinese importer. The guy's father is or was a Chinese CP General. He might be dead by now. This guy (Johnny) was one of the biggest importers in the US/Eastcoast. I think it was Reagan who came up with a "luxury tax" on cars, boats, planes and homes. this guy Johnny went out and bought 3 expensive cars, a yacht and 2 new McMansions before the tax took effect. He was very honest about China going to defeat the US, over time, by economic warfare and stealing out technology.
I for one would love see alot more things with "Made in the USA" on them again. Very rare to find that these days.

Get out your checkbook if that's what you want. You will be paying two to three times more for the same product. That's why it doesn't exist very much

When I was driving home from Toronto, I was stuck in traffic right next the Ford Plant that builds the Aviator. Huge plant. I know that my Dodge Challenger was built in Brampton. My question is, what deals did Canada make with these huge car manufacturers to build their plants in Canada and take them out of the United States. I know that Mexico has always done things cheaper and explains the Mexico plants. I watched a 60 Minutes episode, years ago, about how many large US companies have their corporate offices located in Ireland, (located in the same office building) in order to avoid US taxes. 60 Minutes went to the office buildings and there were no executives working there. Just a local employee secretary to answer the phone and forward the mail and messages back to the US. These were huge name companies and they strictly did it to pay lower taxes. European Union loves them. I don't blame them, they have to answer to the stockholders in the end.
The bottom line by these CEO's was that if the US lowered their tax rates by half, they would return to the US.

It’s very simple: there were always plants in Canada building Big Three cars and others.
Until the 1960s, tariffs on both sides of the border meant that plants in Canada built cars solely for the Canadian market, and plants in the US built the same models for Americans.
That was stupid, really stupid.
Bad for consumers, bad for manufacturers.
Canadians and Americans therefore eventually came up with what came to be known as the Autopact.
It rolled into other free trade agreements that encompassed other industries and products and eventually Mexico became part of the arrangements.
As a result one big factory in Canada makes all the Chargers and Challengers, while one in Michigan builds all the Mustangs (with a Canadian assembled engine if it’s the V8).
Makes total sense in every way when you have roughly equivalent countries in terms of wealth and wages.

It's probably worth noting (for the handful of people still reading) that the original intent of the Autopact was that roughly the same number of cars would be built in Canada as are sold in Canada. The companies were free to build any model where it made the most sense, as long as the overall balance was maintained.

My understanding is that over decades this is pretty much how it worked, with minor imbalances occasionally but no consistent major difference.

Trump's idea that all cars sold in North America should be built in the US was never going to work. If he succeeded in making it financially impossible to build cars in Canada that would also be sold in the US, we would shut the border to US imports and build the cars we need here. It would be terribly inefficient to retool the industry and we would have much less variety because our market it small (certainly no Blackwings!), but we would still be better off overall.

Anyways, I think this is just a smokescreen to distract attention from what Musk is doing elsewhere in the US government.
