A sad ending story about fast cars, vanity plates and the police.
When I was in the Police Academy, we had a class taught by a super experienced crash reconstruction Detective. He brought in a vanity plate that was bent up. The story went, that a young kid (18) with wealthy parents, bought him a new Corvette as a gift. He was racing it in daylight and ended up crashing into a mini van and killed a whole family. Since they had alot of money, they hired a Johnny Cochran type attorney to get the kid off the manslaughter charges. The Corvettes at that time had the "black boxes" in them and it wasn't known publicly at the time. This Detective went to GM and was taught how to access the info and he was able to prove speed, braking and everything else to get a conviction on this spoiled kid. He went away for a loooong time (possibly out by now). The case got dirtier with lawyers claiming that the Detective needed a search warrant to take the black box and he did not. Fruits of the poisonous tree defense. Went to higher courts and they ruled for the prosecution. Mainly because the insurance company paid the claim and THEY were the owners of the black box.
The Detective kept the vanity plate on his wall as a trophy.
****The moral of the story......just please be careful out there and not reckless.
