Quirks of my 5BW

An E60 is not a solution to your problem. I wouldn't call it a raw driving experience and it will for sure come with a laundry list of of issues.

Agreed.

I love my 5BW but I have to admit, I have an E90 M3 sitting around collecting dust and I've seen some tempting LS conversions...

You'd drop that glorious S65 for an LS???

That S65 has its own issues, and getting on near 20 years old, isn't all that any more.

I looked at buying an E92 M3 a couple of years ago. The prices have really gotten stupid, and although it's the last hydraulic steering M car, it's (as I was reminded on a test drive) really not all that fast, it has a big heavy engine in front and it is still an old BMW, which means plenty of electronics still. Even if you find one without the hump.

You guys want analog, you need to go back to the 70s or earlier. Think TR6. Slow, heavy, but sounds great and looks even better.

So, I'm driving home yesterday and traffic starts to back up on the Interstate, so I hit the nav map button to see how far the backup went. I got a nasty message that since I have let my on-star expire, I will get no traffic information. But I thought they gave me 3 extra months for "signing up"? I was planning to cancel after the 3 months, but how did they know that? ;)

It's nearly useless, the traffic thing, so I'm not paying $40/month for it or anything else. I'm just annoyed that I didn't get my 3 free months. And no, I'm not going to use Waze or other stuff on my phone, I'm driving! Can't look at the phone! And I'm not one of those morons who puts the phone up on the dash to distract me from what's going on. Apologies to the morons.

It’s $15 a month for the basic service and at that rate would take 555 years of payments to equal the price of the car. I suppose I’m not a purist since I’ve had native traffic on my primary car since 2011 and find it useful.

Modern cars are computers on wheels. Ever had your PC or Mac lockup? Expect things like screen freezing or going blank. As long as the engine, brakes, and steering work 99.999% of the time I’m satisfied.

I'm glad to hear that my car is not uniquely troubled with it's strange behavior! Seems like a lot of us have noticed weird things that don't seem to make sense.

Unfortunately that basic service is just roadside assistance and crash response, no traffic information.

Of course, the stupid on-star web site is nearly useless and I doubt its accuracy, since it says that the plan that I had before (Essentials) also doesn't have traffic information. So, are they wrong telling me which plan I had before, or wrong about what's in the plan.

I guess I could sign up for it and see if it worked, and cancel if it didn't? But this is almost as annoying as Sirius XM.

I hear ya.. The S65 most definitely had a list of issues. I have an empty place in my heart after selling my 2011 manual E90 M3 about 8 years ago. It only had 40k miles, but I had the TAs and IACV replaced, never touched the RBs. It felt fast when I owned it, but now owning a 5BW, everything else is slow.

Every month I'm casually window shopping E9x Ms. Even the occasional gander at EAG (bonkers).

I assume you don't have an Apple phone and I know little about Android phones but the car supports both Apple CarPlay and Google. I used the Cadillac navigation once and it took me around in circles out in the country. I always use Apple Maps or Waze in Apple CarPlay so it is on the screen. You can select which apps on your phone are mirrored on the screen.

Apologies if you have already covered this.

Another thread, once again, proving the stereotype that Cadillacs are for old men….

I was going off of memory and now that I checked I have "Connected Vehicle" for $9.99 a month and I checked the features and it does include traffic.

I get #1 every once in a while, gave up trying to figure it out.

Sadly, going to be parting with mine soon if anyone here is interested...:)

I was going to say the same thing. I am just sitting here wondering why he isn't using carplay/android auto.

Maybe I'm confused as well. It is early morning and I only just started drinking my coffee

You must have a special rate.

I have an Android, and I don't use Android auto (disclosure: I haven't tried it recently).

I don't have an issue with the nav system, simply the disappearance of traffic. Which is inaccurate anyway, but at least it was something... helpful if the backup is for miles and I can take a detour.

You guys want a lousy factory nav system that takes you on crazy detours, buy a Porsche.

I've also had the horn honking when I close the trunk. I'm pretty sure it's the honk to notify that you left the key in the car, and it's going off because you're close enough with the key that it thinks you're inside. Pretty annoying as it's damn loud in the garage.

Another minor glitch in mine is maybe 1/4 of the time the driver's seat doesn't fully motorize back from its "entry" position to my driver's memory position. I have to hold down the memory 1 button to slide it all the way forward to my position. Kind of annoying in a manual especially.
I just want an epic driving experience, which the BW delivers. BUT the annoyance of all the electronics does get to me sometimes. It's not only with the BW but every single other car out these days.

I'm still tempted to pick up an E92 M3 or E60 M5 MT just for that more raw driving experience without all the extra electronics.
Had an E90 M3 and E39 M5. The beauty of the BW electronic issues is they don't cause expensive engine repairs like they do on those cars.
I'm seriously considering a 4bw but the tech really is a downside for me. All the stuff that can break or malfunction: yuck.

My current fun car is about perfection to me i/r/t tech (i.e. none). Astute eyes will also note the CEL which constantly trips over the charcoal canister, showing that even with a bare-bones computer interface things are never quite happy still.

On the other hand, I'm looking forward to a car that can do than one thing and can actually be driven on an errand and parked without mortal terror, which my Lotus cannot.

I've never seen these interior upgrades!! Can you tell me more? They look great and very unique. I just took a random day off yesterday to first drive the Blackwing on twisty roads, and then my Elise. Best day I've had in a long while.

I'm with you on #1. The rev matching can be dangerous. I was downshifting through a tight off-ramp and it blipped the throttle at the worst possible time. Got me a little loose. From what I believe (I hope someone can tell me I'm wrong), you can't entirely turn it off. It's always there to annoy you.

Do you have an auto? Because on the MT you have to hit the button to turn on rev-matching, otherwise it's always off.

MT. I turn it off with the button, but it still blips on the downshifts. It is only supposed to rev match on the upshifts, even if turned off.

Mine is off when I start the car. I need to turn it on for it to work. I’ve noticed it blip for some gears when off if I’ve been coasting in neutral then shift into a gear.

In my 4BW, the weather app keeps alerting me to what ever the weather channel sends out for my area. I press the dismiss button, two minutes later it comes up again….i dismiss it. Then two minutes later….i have to dismiss it again…then it stops.

Carplay and Android Auto are wireless in the BW and it's vastly superior to any OEM infotainment. Google Maps and Waze offer all the traffic data one could want...unless your daily hat is made of .6mil aluminum sheet metal and you don't want the man to know your comings and goings.

Your cell phone reports your location all the time to its service provider. They manage networks and data flow according, by directing resources to maximize it. Power control, beam forming, switching frequency bands and more…all controlled by knowing where the UE is located. And they know what sites you visit on the internet, I’ve been told by their engineers that porn sites take up on average 30 percent of network traffic.
