I'm not sure if you're handy enough but you could probably take thin red thread and sew a 1/4 in of the side where the key ring is. If you use thin enough thread and follow the groove you probably would never notice.
There are temporary stich techniques which you can easily undo, overall it looks pretty good.
The other thing you could do is get thin tiny plastic washers to put in between the D link ring. Using a washer on both sides will protect the leather from peeling and it will push the leather together.
Maybe it just needs to be stretched out a bit, over time it may just lie flat. Leather eventually stretches.
