When Do You Change Your Oil?

In a recent thread here someone suggested to change the oil at 500 miles and one response said it was unnecessary and overkill. I've been a 500 mile changer for years and was interested in The Motor Oil Geek video on the topic.

Yeah he has the experience, evidence, and expertise to back up the 500 mile recommendation. If GM ever builds my car () I'll be doing the first change at 500.

If yours is a 4BW with CF1 front splitter, you're gonna need the extensions as well.

Unnecessary and overkill. Toyota, GM, etc. have no interest in increasing warranty claims.

You're right except the manufacturers are only concerned about the warranty period. For someone that intends to keep their vehicle long term, the small added expense of 1-2 break in oil changes is worth the added longevity and reliability of the engine 15+ years down the road. If you're flipping cars on a regular basis, this isn't for you.

I'm just waiting to get my Lotus off the lift and get the Cadillac up there so I can do my oil change, I have just under 600 mi. I'm also doing a Blackstone oil analysis as well.

There's just been too much cold, snowy weather to want to bother moving the cars around

Does this extend the engine from 200k to 300k? My wife has had a 98 and 2012 Grand Cherokee that both went to 180k. I know she didn't change the oil before 3k.

Here we go!!! I’ve watched some of his videos and I can’t make through them without slipping into a coma. Does he or anyone ever have any data at all how much longer an engine will supposedly last if you do your brake in oil change at 500, 1500 or when the oil life monitor says to change it? Probably not…..

In the end, I’ve always used common sense when it comes to changing oil. If you track, change it a lot sooner obviously. If it’s a DD, you most likely (99.99%) be fine with the oil life monitor. Most engines blow due to a manufacturing defect or part failure.

I don’t believe that they are only worried about the warranty period. This is one of my favorite claims/arguments. One, we don’t see a line up of vehicles at every manufacturer needing new engines because of longer oil change intervals at 50, 60 or 70k etc.

Two, no manufacturer wants that hit to their reputation, even domestic brands.

I have a had a ton of fun with my cars. A lot more when I learned to relax about a lot of things surrounding them. This being one of them.

So again, no data on what happens if you change your break in oil at 500, 1500 or when the oil life monitor tells you to. Am I correct?

I bought my car 8 months ago with 3,200 miles on it and it already had 4 oil changes recorded on Carfax . I'm sitting at about 6,500 miles now, and I probably wont change it till it gets warm outside as I don't drive it much in the winter. I do plan on changing the oil myself though. Every 5K or once a year.

Outside of the 500mi change, I follow the OM or the monitor for fluid recommendations and frequency. Grating voice guy is at least providing some sort of data. For me it's not data or some objective measure, doing a one-time low interval oil change is really just something I enjoy as a way to get to know my new car. If you don't believe in it, I think we're all gonna be fine
