A few weeks ago, I learned of the Silver State Classic Challenge, which is an open road rally that takes place on a 90 mile stretch of Nevada Highway 318. The road is closed by Nevada police for the day for the race.

Of course, the Silver State Classic Challenge has been run since 1988. An additional event has been run since 1991, called the Nevada Open Road Challenge (this follows the same rules as the Silver State Classic Challenge, but on a shorter 60 mile course which is run once in each direction, with a break between the two runs when drivers and navigators have the option to swap positions).

The Nevada Open Road Challenge will run this year from May 15th - May 18th.

The Silver State Classic Challenge will run this year from September 18th - 21st.

Drivers and (optional) navigators compete to set a specified average speed ("Target Speed") over the 90 mile course. The winner in each speed class is the driver and navigator that achieve the speed closest to their target speed.

There are four main classes (Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Sport, and Super Sport), each of which has several subclasses. Touring class has speed classes of 95, 100, 105, and 110 mph. For the Touring class, stock cars with regular 3-point seatbelts may be run. A handheld fire extinguisher must be fitted, while gloves and Snell approved motorsports helmets must be worn by drivers and navigators. First-time drivers must run in this class unless they have appropriate motorsports experience. At no time may the car exceed the Tech Speed of 124 mph. The challenge is that you must exceed your target speed at the beginning, as there is a section of the road called "The Narrows" in which you will have to slow down, yet at the finish line you must average as close at possible to your target speed class. The most competitive class is 110 mph and it has the most entrants.

This seems like at ideal activity for stock Blackwings. You need driving gloves, a helmet, a 10 lb fire extinguisher. Higher classes require more safety equipment installed. Your tires must be in good shape (a tire blowout at race speeds is not a happy fun time).

I thought I would pass it along as it seems like it could be a fun activity for Blackwing owners. Who knows, if we get enough interested Blackwing owners competing, we could form an unofficial "Blackwing Team". We could then team up with the Corvette owners to make fun of the Porshe owners.

For more information, see the official website of The Silver State Classic Challenge. If you search YouTube, you can also find a lot of videos of people running the challenge.

If I lived anywhere close, I'd try this one. Sounds like fun!

How does fuel work for this event? a CT5 Blackwing will last ~3X 20 minute sessions track driving until empty.

I share you concern.

Consider:
Everyone stays in the town of Ely, NV for the race and associated events.

The actual road course is from Lund, NV to Hiko, NV and is 90 miles long (this will take 49:04 minutes at 110 mph).

The distance from Ely to Lund is 37 miles.

So the round trip mileage that day is 37+90+90+37 = 254 miles. Which is where I start getting range anxiety in the Blackwing. Plus, 90 of those miles are at 110 mph -- what kind of mileage am I going to get at that speed?

However, the resolution of this dilemma is that 13 miles south of HIko is the town of Ash Springs, NV. There is a Shell station in Ash Springs ("Sweet, merciful gas ...").

See the course map here.

What's the penalty when I try to push it past 200mph? Cuz yea I still haven't done that and I want to.

I had a buddy who used to race the Silver State Classic every year. Its insane how competitive it is.

The top 5 in each class are separated by milliseconds. And they're all just milliseconds away from the perfect target time.

I believe they have open classes where its an actual race - fastest wins. But rules basically require a purpose built race car with all associated safety features.

I think it would be fun though. And 100 miles at just 110 is nothing to worry about range wise.

What's the entry fee ?

I can't do the May event, but it might be fun to do the September one. I bet its still hot as hell in September though...........

I think there are similar events in many other places too. Including Big Bend - closer to home for me:

You are disqualified if you go above the maximum tech speed for your class (unless you are racing in the unlimited class). For the Touring class, the maximum is 124 mph. Flagrantly exceeding that could get you banned from future races.
