2014 Cadillac CTS Vsport: In a segment dominated by Germans, it's a serious player

After decades of opera lamps and landau roofs, Cadillac’s a player.

I can remember about 10 years ago at the Detroit Auto Show asking an executive of a German luxury car maker if he ever lost any sleep over American luxury brands.

“Not so much Lincoln and Chrysler,” he said, “but we’re keeping an eye on Cadillac.”

The last 10 years have brought plenty more to see — and over which to lose sleep. The compact ATS, introduced in 2013, is Cadillac’s credible challenger to Audi’s A4, BMW’s 3-Series and Mercedes’ C-Class. And now the all-new 2014 CTS, which started Caddy’s march back to respectability back in 2003, is better positioned than ever to face down the A6, 5 Series and E-Class.

That’s because CTS has grown in this, its third generation. The wheelbase is 1.2 inches longer, the length 5 inches longer.

The payoff is more interior room, whether the choice may be — the base car, with its 272-hp turbo four; the mid-level, 321-hp V-6; or the Vsport we drove, with its snarling 420-hp twin-turbo V-6.
